Sarnia Moving Checklist: What to Do Before Move Day

A move feels smaller when it is broken into weeks. This checklist is what our Sarnia crews wish every customer had: what to do six weeks out, two weeks out and on moving day, for homes and condos across Sarnia, Point Edward, Bright's Grove and Lambton County.

Six weeks before

• Choose your move date. Mid-month weekdays are easiest to book; month-end weekends fill first.
• Ask two or three moving companies for a written quote. Give each the same details: both addresses, floors, elevator or stairs, and any heavy items.
• Walk through every room and decide what you will not take. Selling, donating or recycling it now means less to pack and move.

Four weeks before

• Book your movers and get the quote in writing.
• If you live in a condo or apartment, ask the building how to book the service elevator and loading area, and whether the movers need to send a certificate of insurance.
• Start packing rooms you use least: guest rooms, basement storage, seasonal clothes.
• Get boxes or plastic bins. We rent plastic moving bins and sell cardboard boxes.

Two weeks before

• Set up electricity, water, gas and internet at the new address, and book the shut-off at the old one.
• Forward your mail and update your address with your bank, employer, insurance and doctor.

One week before

• Pack everything except what you use every day.
• Label each box with the room it goes to.
• Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer.
• Drain the hot tub and have an electrician disconnect it, if it is moving.
• From November to March, plan for lake-effect snow: have salt and a shovel ready at both homes.

Moving day

• Keep keys, documents, medicine, chargers and a change of clothes with you, not on the truck.
• Walk through the home with the crew lead before loading starts, and point out anything fragile.
• Do a last walk-through of every room, closet and cupboard before the truck leaves.

The first night

Pack one bin for the first night: bedding, towels, toilet paper, a kettle or coffee maker, snacks and basic tools. Ask the crew to set up the beds first, so the first night is easy even if the boxes wait.
